The Treasure of The Sierra Madre

1948.
#30 / #38
Winner of 2 Academy Awards.

Two Americans join with an old prospector (Walter Huston) to find gold. However, as their gold piles grow, so does suspicion and paranoia.

Sarah: Eddie and I had both never seen this one, so we were lucky to catch it at The New Beverly. I was surprised to see a new Humphrey Bogart. He was not romantic or cool in this movie; instead he was sick, twisted, and his mind slowly unraveling. It's an impressive performance that truly shows Bogart's range as an actor, which is good, because I have long been wondering how such an odd looking guy won so many leading man roles.

But, it is definitely another one of those "Hey, why is this on the list?" type of movies. Well... I don't know why it is on the list. It's an enjoyable movie, but nothing about it will haunt the audience, nothing about it will have them thinking about it weeks later. So I'm beginning to learn that the AFI list is pretty subjective.

Eddie: Yeah. This is a movie with one unbelievably famous line ("Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!"), which must have endeared the film to AFI voters. It's a good movie, but that's all it is. By no means great, TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE is a 1948 popcorn movie. I don't mean to imply that popcorn movies shouldn't make the AFI 100; I just think that there are better popcorn movies out there worth noting.

Why You Should See It: Since this is the line that the film is known for, might as well point it out here.
