All About Eve

1950.
#16 / #28
Winner of 6 Academy Awards.

Famed stage Actress Margot Channing (Bette Davis) befriends an awestuck fan Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter). Soon Eve's career takes off while Margot's declines. Margot and friends begin to wonder if Eve really is as innocent as she seems.

Sarah: This film has many similarities to SUNSET BOULEVARD. Both start in the present and flash back, and both star aging actresses. The difference here is that Margot Channing is still hanging onto her career.

The acting in the whole cast is great. Bette Davis is misbehaved and vulnerable. Anne Baxter's performance is so great you won't know what to believe until near the end of the film. What's most interesting is that real life imitated art here. Anne Baxter would not let the studio nominate her as best supporting actress. She insisted on going against Bette Davis as Best Actress. Their votes were split and the award went to Judy Holliday (Who? Exactly). Later Baxter admitted she made a mistake, but the damage was done.

Eddie: Anne Baxter and Bette Davis take this film to another level. Baxter is pure evil, and Davis is thrust into her web of manipulation. Great movie. I actually preferred this to SUNSET BOULEVARD.

Why You Should See It: The final shot. The cycle continues. Priceless!
